Water-based activities such as swimming and water aerobics are great forms of exercise for fat people. Protein is important for strength. And a caloric excess is necessary to add mass.

Also wanted to add that the big three Powerlifting exercises (bench press, deadlift, squat) will add muscle mass.

Walking is the best exercise for fat people. She will get all of the health benefits from walking without burning too many calories. She will also build strength just from hauling all of her extra weight around.

If you walk and swing weights (look up Heavyhands) that will give you even more of a workout. It will definitely burn more calories, FWIW.

I also recommend that you take a look at protein powders and Creatine.

As others have said, cardio like walking, biking, and swimming is always good and relatively easy on the body. I wouldn't recommend running as even on lighter people, that can destroy your knees.

Weightlifting will also help carry the weight. Notice how real powerlifters are almost always strong fat and not people with shredded abs.

How big is she now? And how much bigger is she hoping to get? I'm 5'4 and went from 130-200. I walk for miles. I will sometimes do some basic strength training stuff. Either with bodyweight or with dumbbells.

It's super easy. It all depends on what she's eating and the intensity of her exercises.
